About The McLeod River PCN

Established in 2010 through a trilateral agreement between the Alberta Medical Association, Alberta Health, and Alberta Health Services, Primary Care Networks (PCNs) are an extension of a family physician’s services. McLeod River PCN works with local primary care physicians in Whitecourt, Edson, Fox Creek, and Mayerthorpe in the delivery of primary healthcare services. Our team focuses on health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and care of patients who are medically complex or who have a chronic health condition.

Position Summary

The Physiotherapist will assist patients in developing skills to improve their level of function and quality of life. This is a 1.0 FTE temporary position ending in March 2025 with the possibility of an extension.

What you will do...
  • Assist in identifying priorities for care and development of patient treatment care plans
  • Assess the patient’s level of mobility, strength, endurance, and other physical abilities to determine the impact of illness or injury on physical function
  • Diagnose physical conditions and develop treatment plans to restore movement and function and reduce pain or limitations to mobility
  • Collaborate with other clinical team members to assess and treat patients’ physical impairments and subsequent disabilities encompassing the musculoskeletal parameters of range of motion of joints, muscle length, muscle strength, endurance/cardiovascular fitness
  • Document patient assessment, treatment information, reports, referrals, etc. and maintain patient charts in accordance with practice standards and organizational policy
  • Measure patient progress regularly and adjust treatment accordingly
  • Conduct testing of physical musculoskeletal outcome measures pre- and post-treatment
  • Advise patients on how to manage their conditions independently and help them prevent avoidable recurrences or complications
  • Provide education to patients, both individually and in group settings, to support self-management of their conditions
  • Ensure continuity of care by liaising with other providers and referring patients to appropriate programs, services and agencies as required
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with primary care physicians, team members and internal/external resources
  • Responsible for all the medical equipment used by the provider while treating in the clinic to ensure that safety guidelines are being maintained
  • Knowledge of and adherence to organizational policies and procedures
  • Adherence to Physiotherapy Alberta standards of practice and Code of Ethics
What you need to succeed...
  • Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy from an accredited physiotherapy program at a recognized university
  • Successful completion of a national physiotherapy competency exam
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a healthcare setting or equivalent
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure in Alberta with Physiotherapy Alberta
  • Canadian Orthopedic Division Level II Upper/Lower Quadrant or equivalent preferred
  • IMS or acupuncture certification considered an asset
  • Experience in a healthcare setting is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of current persistent pain theory
  • Knowledge of musculoskeletal conditions along with their prevention and management
  • Musculoskeletal evaluation and treatment skills
  • Awareness of ergonomic principles and application
  • Knowledge of appropriate use of modalities in the chronic pain population
  • Awareness of social determinants of health and principles of self-management
  • Strong oral, written and analytical skills; self-directed and accountable and high level of perceptiveness
  • Ability to build a good working relationship with healthcare professionals, clients and other members of the community
  • Ability to prioritize, manage time effectively and be flexible in a very active work environment
  • High levels of integrity and professional behaviour
  • Ability to maintain patient privacy and confidentiality
  • Attention to details and problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Able to work independently and demonstrates ability to be proactive in completing duties
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to handle multiple assignments and tasks while meeting deadlines
  • Understanding of EMR software is an asset
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
